String Instrument

March is looking decidedly mundane, if the first five days are any indication. I’m still recovering from my St. David’s Day festivities on the 1st (more about that here) so I suppose it’s all downhill until April. Even so, the laundry is washed and folded, the dishes are done and put away, and it’s grey and rainy outside, so what could I possibly have to talk about today? Why, dental floss, of course!

Floss is even more mundane than my March to-date, yet there I stood, dwelling on the little nylon spool as I spun out another 18″ this morning. Snap off a length, wind tightly around the fingers, and commence the see-saw journey between and around each of your 28 pearlies (32 if you still have “wisdom”). It’s like you’re playing the smallest string instrument in the orchestra, and all you can contribute is the occasional enamel squeak.

Why do I wonder about floss?  So you don’t have to!  On the list of all activities considered “morning routine” you’re probably way more invested in brushing your teeth, washing your face, or even throwing on deodorant.  Flossing is the one where you stare into the mirror thinking, “Why can’t I text while I do this?”

Floss.  Looks weird and sounds weird, but it’s nothing more than a silky strand, at least in its original form.  Then Johnson & Johnson came up with the nylon alternative – much easier to manufacture in large quantities – and today’s product was born.  Waxed or unwaxed.  Mono or multi-filament.  Tape or picks.  Whatever your weapon against plaque and gingivitis, we’re all participating in pretty much the same activity.

Candy floss is just another name for cotton candy.  Meat floss is a dried, fluffy version of Chinese pork (appropriately named “yuk”).  Floss is also an embroidery term, a town and river in Germany, and an awkward dance move where the arms swing rapidly behind and in front of the body.  But none of those are the first to come to mind when I say “floss”, right? 

Here’s what I want to know.  Why hasn’t someone made flossing more convenient in the 125+ years we’ve all been doing it?  Seriously, I’m picturing those little scrubbing bubbles zooming all over the porcelain of your bathtub, leaving it squeaky clean.  Couldn’t we have a similar product we swish around in our mouths?  It’d be like a dose of Pop Rocks, where you have a few moments of crackling and hissing in your mouth, followed by a rinse and spit.  Bye-bye plaque, no nylon required.

I didn’t manage to “habit” flossing until about age 25.  Before that I was too busy accumulating cavities.  I’m still trying to perfect the see-saw technique after all these years.  Scrape each tooth instead of just snapping up and down between them.  Rewind the floss a few times on your fingers so you’re not using the same inches on all of your teeth.  Floss before you brush.  Finally – the tough one for me – make flossing part of your evening routine, not your morning.

Here’s the math (because I just have to know these things).  If I’ve really flossed every day since my mid-twenties, I’ve used over four miles of the stuff (or 20,000+ ft).  At 18″ per cleaning that’s countless little lengths.  But here’s another way to look at it.  A typical dispenser of floss contains 55 yards, meaning in almost forty years I’ve only purchased 128.  You could probably fit those dispensers into a single shoebox.  And at $1.29 per dispenser, the whole box only sets you back $165.

Until someone invents those edible scrubbing bubbles, I’ll keep filling up shoeboxes with empty floss dispensers.  My product is Reach; yours might be something more exotic like “Grin Fine Flosspyx” or “Boca Ela Mint”.  No matter how fancy the name, it’s just a piece of nylon string.  And until my March gets more exciting you’ll find me in front of the mirror each morning (er, evening), playing my little string instrument.

First-Name Basis

It’s only Tuesday as I type, but I’ve already cleared my calendar for Friday. After all, I have a very important day ahead of me. So important in fact, I need to organize a parade, raise a flag, and prepare unique dishes for the expected throng of adoring fans. But why am I wasting words on the details? You already know we’re celebrating Saint David’s Day in a few days, don’t you?

They’ll be celebrating in Wales, at least, just as they do every first day of March.  You’ll find my cathedral there too, way down in the southwest corner of the country.  Well, St Davids Cathedral, I mean.  And the funny thing is, he’s not the David you’re thinking of, the one from the Bible who took down Goliath as a boy and became king as a man.  This David helped to spread Christianity throughout the UK, united the Welsh people against a warring England, and performed several miracles.  David’s a big deal in Wales.

St. Patrick’s an even bigger deal, of course.  At least Patrick rates a celebration in the U.S.  But admit it, you’re not celebrating Patrick’s spread of Christianity throughout Ireland, nor his miracle of removing all snakes from the land.  You’re thinking more about what garment of green to wear, four-leaf clovers, beer, and maybe, just maybe, this is the year you participate in your local St. Paddy’s Day 5k.

This business of saints is interesting to me because, well, it’s not as defined as I was led to believe.  The rules and processes to put “Saint” in front a first name are a little vague.  Suffice it to say, you need to be a model citizen, as well as a teacher, person of influence, and someone who cares little for the material goods and comforts of this world.  I know a lot of people who fill this bill, but add in “wonder worker” or “source of benevolent power” and the list drops to zero.

Saints are also on my mind because I grew up in California and, well, they’re all over the place out there.  Francisco to the north.  Diego to the south.  Barbara somewhere in the middle.  My childhood home was right down the street from Monica.  My brother lives in Fernando’s valley.  99.9% of the state’s residents think of those as “places”, but firstly they were people.  You’ll find “San’s” and “Santa’s” all over the Golden State.

Saints get a little watered down when you consider the Catholic Church’s take on them.  More than 10,000 have been recognized over time.  Even more to the point, Catholics acknowledge anyone making it to heaven to be a saint.  I’d hope that count is way more than 10,000 by now.  Maybe it’s the reason we have patron saints: the cream of the crop, the ones regarded as “heavenly advocates of particular nations, families, or people”.  My patron saint isn’t David by default, but I sure like his name.

Admittedly, my mind wanders somewhere other than historical figures when I think of saints.  Our dog is a Saint Bernard, one of those gentle giants you picture with a brandy brandy around the neck.  A few years ago we went on a cruise, with a stop in the Baltic Sea port of Saint Petersburg.  “St. Elmo’s Fire” is a luminous phenomenon caused by an atmospheric electric field. (also a pretty good movie from the 1980s).  And so on.

You can read a bit more about Saint David and his cathedral in one of my very first blog posts: unsung.  You’ll discover that his town of Pembrokeshire – the smallest kingdom enclave in the UK – is right across St. George’s Channel from the Irish town of Kildare, where you’ll find St. Brigid’s Cathedral, my wife’s namesake.  The blog post is really about Brigid but at least David gets a mention towards the end.  Even if you don’t “read a little more”, remember, Friday’s the big day.  Parades, flags, and fun food, all for a darned decent guy.  Makes me blush anytime somebody says, “Dave, you’re a saint.”

Dreamy Las Vegas

DID YOU HEAR?  The price of Super Bowl tickets dropped this week!  That’s right, you and me will pay less for seats today than those jump-the-gun fans who got theirs ten days ago.  The game’s in three days so we’ve got no time to lose!  Let’s make our travel plans!

I’m gonna surprise my wife.  I mean, I’m the bigger football fan, yes, but she’ll be so proud of me for getting our game tickets for less!  And to celebrate “all things her” I figure, why not splurge on the rest of the trip since I’m saving money on the game?  Once in a lifetime, I’m telling myself.  Heck, by the time the Super Bowl comes to Vegas a second time she and I could be dead!

FIRST, new luggage.  I want the two of us to be those people, where just a glance at their bags has you thinking, “Whoa, who are they?”.  So, a quick trip to Tumi for a couple of their hard-shell packing cases ($1,500 per) and matching carry-on’s ($750).  Getting the gold finish too, because you’ve got to look the part if you’re going to Vegas.

SECOND, airfare.  I got me an itinerary lickety-split on Expedia, flying American.  Leave Thursday, return Tuesday. Turns out we can’t get there direct since we live in the middle of nowhere but at least we can fly first class, for just $6,826, with only $600 in taxes and fees.  Score!

THIRD, transportation to the hotel.  I’m not about to show up at the front doors with Tumi luggage in a rental car so it’s limo service for us!  My choice: a modest SUV for two (well, three, including our private driver).  I know, I know, I could’ve gone with the BMW stretch limo that seats twenty-five, but what are my wife and I gonna do – run laps around the inside of it?  Besides, the SUV is described as “… for the VIP who prefers discretion” and that’s a great way to describe my wife.  Round-trip: $375, with $75 in tips.

NOW THEN, the hotel.  Gotta be big and flashy, right?  Can’t be going to Vegas and the big game and staying at a Motel 6.  Let’s go with the Bellagio.  I don’t need a suite but I’d sure like a view of those lovely fountains.  The hotel website quotes five nights for a “1 King Bed Fountain View” at $10,113, including $3,144 in resort fees.  Yeah, I winced a bit with the five-figure quote but then the website flashed, Jackpot! This is today’s low rate! so I felt much better. The website also added a ten-minute timer on the rate but no worries – I booked it in less than five!  Makes the $300 room service dinners seem like nothing, doesn’t it?

In the days leading up to the game I’ll pamper my wife a little.  In fact, since I love the view of those Bellagio fountains so much, guess what?  I can order up a couples massage right there in the room! Only $650 for the two of us, including $110 of gratitude to the masseuses.  Then we’ll be nice and relaxed for a dinner at, say, the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at the Paris Hotel (and another view of those fountains).  We’ll start with Casco Bay scallops ($32), followed by mixed greens ($38) and the “Queen’s Cut Beef Tenderloin Filet Mignon” ($138), with a plate of accompaniments and sauces ($42).  We’ll finish up with a couple of the house special “Eiffel Tower soufflés” ($44), and wash it all down with a nice enough bottle of red ($80).  Another $110 in tax and tips calls it a night.

Now wait a sec’. Since when does anyone in Vegas “call it a night” after dinner?  So I thought about taking my wife to a big-name concert at the new Sphere but then it hit me. ‘O’ by Cirque du Soliel is right there in the Bellagio hotel!  Two orchestra-center seats: $657, and only $93 tax/fees!

FINALLY… what I’ve been building to for hundreds of words now – Super Bowl XVIII.  I’ve never been to Allegiant Stadium before and this’ll probably be my only visit, so…  No, I didn’t go completely off the rails (like seats on the fifty or a sky box) but I do want to see the plays up close and personal so it’s got to be lower bowl, at least the 20-yard line.  Oh man, what a relief!  I found the last pair of tickets in Section C137 for $29,000 out the door (only $5,000 in service fees!)  A flame emoji and a blinking “selling fast” sign had me sweating but I managed to get ’em before the next guy!  Don’t forget, these same tickets would’ve cost me even more just a week ago.  Can I find a bargain or what?

Oh, uh… hey… it’s Dave, your, uh, “weekly blogger”.  Holy cow, let me tell you, I just woke up from the craziest dream.  I was headed to the Super Bowl last-minute, see, and everything about the trip was the best Vegas had to offer.  Hotel, dinner, show, game tickets – the works.  Now that I’m awake, I’m wondering what all that fun would’ve cost me.  $53,598 comes to mind for some reason but I’m sure I didn’t “spend” anywhere near that amount.  Just a crazy dream.  Anyway, sorry to write and run but I’ve got to return a call to my bank, asking about unusual activity on my credit card.

Keeping Score at the Grocery Store

In the chaos of the supermarket a few days before Christmas, milk, eggnog, and a package of those Li’l Smokies sausages fell into our shopping cart. These items don’t usually find their way into our frig but the year-end holiday meals somehow demanded them. If the market wasn’t so frantic I would’ve also whipped out my phone to see if these purchases deserved my dollars. After all, just about everything we use in the kitchen (and bathroom) these days has a little numeric value lurking just below the surface.

Nacho Cheese Doritos are now a “5” in my world.  You might say pretty good! until I tell you that’s on a scale of 1-100.  But let’s say you choose Blue Diamond’s Almond Nut-Thin Crackers instead.  The number skyrockets to 84.  A roll of Wint-O-Green Life Savers earns a 28 while a box of Tic Tac Freshmints doubles the number.  Nature Valley Granola Bars? 51. Heinz Ketchup? 33.  And in the ultimate insult to products considered “food”, perfectly round Nabisco Oreos earn a perfectly round 0/100.

What’s with all the tallying, you ask?  The numbers are simply the output of a little smartphone app called Yuka, which joined my personal parade of subscriptions last May.  In the words of its young French founders (Julie, and brothers Francois and Benoît), Yuka “deciphers product labels and analyzes the health benefits of foods and cosmetics”.  Plain English: Scan the barcode of anything in the supermarket and Yuka tells you whether to buy it or not.

Candidly, it wasn’t the numbers that sold me on Yuka.  Rather it’s this: the app is completely ad-free because brands cannot pay Yuka to advertise their products.  In other words, the numerical ratings I’ve shared are generated objectively, using common perceptions of the health benefits of ingredients.  Yuka has rocked the small space known as my kitchen pantry.

Never is this overhaul more evident than with “cosmetics”, Yuka’s catch-all for everything you find in the bathroom.  In the last eight months I’ve swapped out my deodorant, mouthwash, shaving cream, shampoo, and face wash for items with better Yuka numbers.  Five products I used every day and purchased for years just went flying off my medicine cabinet shelves, replaced by other products that are healthier on and in me (including Aveeno’s facial cleanser, which earns a perfect 100).

Yuka (the name is a nod to Yucatán) is about more than scan-and-score.  You can also simply search on products, mining a database of five million entries.  Even if a product isn’t in the database you can enter the ingredients from the label and Yuka will give it a number.  And if that number is lousy (like it is for your Oreos or my L’il Smokies) Yuka will point you to a list of alternatives with better numbers.  Again, Yuka doesn’t recommend one product over another; it just presents the numbers for you to consider.

In a nod to the healthy habits of Europeans (who favor fresh foods), Yuka’s founders realized its app was most popular in America, where we are so fond of packaged products.  So they packed up their French offices and French families and moved to the middle of Manhattan – temporarily – to better connect with their target audience.  Eventually they’ll head back home but not before Yuka is sure to land on the smartphones of millions of Americans.

Here’s one more aspect of Yuka I appreciate: the founders take time to communicate with their users.  In the eight months I’ve subscribed, they’ve sent me twelve emails with interesting articles about healthy eating, healthy “cosmetics”, and the entertaining evolution of their little company (which includes a dog as an employee).  They also sent me a fun video of their first few days in New York City.  And just last week I received a year-end recap of my app use (93 products scanned with an average score of 46).  No advertisements and no product pushes.

The subscriber version of Yuka is $15/year (you can try a more limited version for free), which includes the convenient scan-for-a-score feature.  Furthermore, your subscription dollars are what keeps Yuka in business, instead of funding manufacturers who’d like nothing more than to push their products on you.  That’s just one of the reasons I now keep score at the grocery store.

Christmas Customs Crisis?

In the 1971 movie Fiddler on the Roof, the musical numbers are familiar even fifty years after the fact. Songs like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “Sunrise, Sunset” play in my head in the voices of those long-ago performers. But it’s the opening number – “Tradition” – I hear most clearly, in the robust voice of actor Topol. The lyrics, covering the expected roles of father, mother, son, and daughter, speak to maintaining things as they always were. Which brings me to Christmas, and my family’s somewhat threatened traditions.

The easy way out here would be to list mine and ask you for yours.  We’d probably have some traditions in common and others we’d be hearing about for the first time.  Instead let me ask, are any of them robust enough to make it through the long haul?  As fast as the world is changing, you have to wonder what Christmas celebrations will look like ten and twenty years from now.  Seriously, do you expect hard-copy Christmas cards in the 2030s?  (Will you even have a mailbox?)

The Christmas tree is a good place to start.  As I’ve blogged about before, our tree is always real (versus artificial), purchased from a nearby lot after choosing the best fit for the house and budget.  This year however, I admit to a pause when I saw the price tags on the branches.  I swear the cost of Christmas trees doubled from 2022.  Economics says it’s a case of supply and demand, but in this case both are declining.  Tree farms surrender to developers.  The preference for artificial trees has risen steadily over the past fifteen years (to 77% of us now).  So less trees and less demand.  My 2030 Christmas may include an artificial tree whether I like it or not.

Christmas dinner faces a similar challenge.  The beef tenderloin we prefer for our celebration is a once-a-year luxury but it’s about to become a never-a-year purchase.  Even at a big box like Costco a trimmed tenderloin sets you back $40 a serving.  You start to wonder if burgers wouldn’t be just as satisfying simply for the money saved.  Even better – snacking throughout the day, and then your Christmas dinner appetite will be satisfied by a few side dishes and dessert?

Christmas (Eve) church already faced its toughest test (COVID) but did it really survive?  I remember the service we attended in 2020… from the “comfort” of our car with the preacher and the choir at the edge of the church parking lot.  The next two Christmases brought parishioners back indoors… but in far fewer numbers.  I admit to getting comfortable with “laptop church” every now and then, but Christmas Eve will be in person as long as there are sanctuaries and services.

Christmas carols may be the one tradition where serious change is in order.  Maybe you heard; Brenda Lee’s 1958 version of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year .  That’s “staying power” (maybe staying a little too long) but it also suggests we’re not creating enough new music.  And how many versions of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” are we going to make before we decide not to change the lyrics but rather to ditch the song once and for all?  Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and Karen Carpenter will always have a place on Christmas playlists. The rest are getting old and it’s time for more “new”.

Christmas lights don’t leave much room for debate.  Not only will they be shining brighter than ever in the 2030s, they’ll be holographic, animatronic, and experiential.  Instead of a drive-thru Christmas display, the display will probably drive through you.  You’ll also have the option of enjoying your neighbors’ displays from the comfort of your living room (using the “mixed reality” headset you got for Christmas).

Finally, Christmas movies have pretty much run their course because you can only spin so many stories around the holiday (and anything on the Hallmark Channel doesn’t qualify as a movie).  Having said that, I’ll go to my grave watching It’s A Wonderful Life every December.  Even if there are no Christmas cards, tree, or dinner, and I’m tortured with yet another version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, I know I can always find tradition and the true meaning of Christmas alongside Jimmy Stewart, in a little town called Bedford Falls.

Beyond Quenching

Last week on Thanksgiving, I drank the following beverages in a start-to-finish order I may or may not recall correctly: water, coffee, more water, eggnog, water again, wine, and just before bed, a final gulp of water. Eggnog aside (and wine only occasionally) it was a typical day of liquid consumption. But on the list of reasons why I drink anything at all, I find it interesting “quenching thirst” settles to the bottom of the pool.  Closer to the surface are the more interesting intentions.  Collectively you might refer to these habits as my daily fluid dynamics (DFDs).

When I wake up, the first thing I do (make that the second thing I do, after walking the dog) is to down a glass of water; a full sixteen ounces.  I used to knock back just enough to chase my daily vitamins but then I read how you should drink water first thing in the morning, because technically you’ve been dehydrating for the last eight hours.  So I started filling ‘er up to the top of the glass, a two-cup habit I’ve maintained for a long time now.  Let’s list that habit as DFD #1: To help swallow things (like vitamins).

My top-o’-the-mornin’ water stands in the way of the one drink that truly matters in life: coffee (or tea for the rest of you).  My daily dose of caffeine is always the same: twelve ounces of the rich and robust stuff, with just a splash of cream to take the edge off.  Coffee takes me from foggy to functioning in a matter of sips.  Post-coffee Dave is alert and ready to conquer the day.  Call it a chemical dependency?  Hardly.  I can skip my “daily grind” here or there and be none the worse for wear.  But morning brew is undeniably one of life’s simple pleasures.  DFD #2: To deliver a morning wake-me-up. 

Let’s make a brief rest stop on our tour of daily fluid dynamics… literally.  My morning coffee comes with one utterly inconvenient side effect: the recurring “call of nature”.  Something about caffeine seeks to clear out every available drop of moisture from my body, until I might as well be dust.  It’s like one of those juice presses, only press down uncomfortably on the fruit every, oh, twenty minutes.  If I could down an entire liter of cold brew, not only would I be bouncing off the walls but I’d also lose at least ten pounds in water weight over the next hour.  Maybe I’ve discovered America’s next diet craze.

Okay, we’re back from our visit to the “powder room”.  I’m chugging water several more times during the day (indeed, high/dry Colorado made my faithful companion a water bottle, wherever I go).  But is all this water because I’m thirsty or because I can’t get the old saw out of my head, the one that recommends “eight to ten cups a day”?  A similar water saw says to consume half your body weight in ounces, but let’s be real: I never get to that number (nor do I believe in one-rule-applies-to-all).  Yet getting enough H2O still rattles around in my brain.  So, DFD #3: To hydrate the body.

Eggnog done right (meaning it’s often done wrong) is my favorite drink of the holiday season.  Conveniently, the creamy concoction also serves as a throat-soother when you’re sick.  It’s cold, with a thicker-than-milk consistency that settles on your throat for a fair amount of time.  Reminds me of the old Pepto-Bismol jingle (“the pink stuff”), how it “coats, soothes”.  Eggnog might be as effective as a cough drop and it tastes a whole lot better.  DFD #4: To ease a sore throat or cough.

Wine makes my fluids list regularly, and it would even if I had no argument for a DFD.  But I do.  Like today’s college “pre-game” drinking (or tomorrow’s holiday party you’re dreading), sips of wine dull the senses, warm the insides, and melt away stress.  Loose lips are a common side effect, but wine in moderation typically makes the conversation flow.  Plus, the right vintage simply tastes great, time and again.  DFD #5 then: To act as a “social lubricant”.

Last (and least), water is not only my top o’ the mornin’ but also my close o’ the evenin’ drink.  After the toothpaste, the floss, and the oral rinse, the water goes in and comes right back out.  Swishing, gargling, rinsing, and spitting – it’s all an effort to restore order beyond the lips, so you head to bed without the breath of the dead.  The only more effective approach would be a fire hose on full blast. So, DFD #6: To cleanse the mouth.

Maybe you’re a little more introspective about your consumption of beverages now (and you’re welcome).  Like I said, quenching thirst is somewhere near the bottom of the pool.  So the next time you’re taking a sip, and someone notices you being particularly thoughtful about it, just tell them you’d like to explain a little something called daily fluid dynamics.

It’s Thanksgiving Season (#4)

Well now, I told you the Thanksgiving season would fly by didn’t I?  Those 23 days came, went, and BAM! here we are – Thanksgiving Day itself.  Good thing you kept a Gratitude Calendar like I asked you to.  You did keep one, didn’t you – the list of things you’re grateful for this season?  No, you can’t have my list (who are you, that kid who copied off of others in grade school?) but I will let you read it:

  1. WordPress, which allowed me to schedule this post ahead of time so I can spend Thanksgiving Day focused on much more important things.
  2. Thanksgiving cards, purchased for family and friends before the torrent of Christmas cards pushed them off the shelves.
  3. Our son, visiting this weekend all the way from Colorado.
  4. Witnessing my beloved alma mater face Clemson on the football field (even if Notre Dame “didn’t show up”).
  5. Today’s extra hour of sleep, even if I couldn’t manage to sleep for an extra hour.
  6. Babysitting my granddaughter, even if she produced what I’d politely call a “blowout”.
  7. Making it to the car dealership safely on a suspect front left wheel.
  8. Repair of that wheel by mechanics who know a lot more about fixing cars than I do.
  9. A perfectly still morning with the dog and a cup of coffee before easing into the day’s activities.
  10. My mother, who was born on this day 95 years ago.
  11. My body, which allows me to continue the regular, rigorous workouts I enjoy.
  12. My wife, my endless source of love and laughter.
  13. The quiet, peaceful, safe community I live in (and utterly take for granted).
  14. A long-awaited rain shower, and hopefully the first of many.
  15. The many entertaining blog posts from my “online family”: those I faithfully follow and who faithfully follow me.
  16. The family and friends who keep us tied to our former years in Colorado.
  17. A perfect fall day in Colorado, allowing me to accomplish the many things I had on my agenda.
  18. The reunion of my wife’s family with her mother (a gathering that hasn’t taken place in over ten years).
  19. A visit with my Colorado granddaughters, and the opportunity to walk my eldest to kindergarten the following morning.

And… that’s enough for today.  You should be focused on family and friends anyway, not blog posts.  Wait – one more thing – a throwback term to mix in with your Thanksgiving spread: requital (with the middle part of the word pronounced like “quite”).  A requital is a return or a reward for an act of kindness.  Here’s how Beethoven used it back when he was still making music: As a slight requital of your kind souvenir, I take the liberty to send you some variations, and a Rondo with violin accompaniment.  Fancy, huh?  Now, go impress your guests around the table by using your new word.

Oh, and if you didn’t keep a calendar of things to be thankful for? Seriously, what are you waiting for?  C’mon, get grateful already!

It’s Thanksgiving Season (#3)

Earlier this week the first Christmas card arrived in the mail.  For heaven’s sake it’s not even November 25th, people.  Then we stopped by Chick-fil-A and my wife asked if they had their Peppermint Chip milkshake, which of course they did because it’s “Christmas season”.  Finally, we’re seeing strings of colored lights and decorations on houses already.  Am I losing the battle of the Thanksgiving season with a full week still to go?  Maybe I need a different tack with my campaign.

Let’s talk about Thanksgiving dishes today.  Are yours made of pottery, wood, metal, or glass?  Oh, you thought I meant food.  Well, yes, I do, but somehow we’ve stretched the definition of “any container used at the table” to also mean what’s in or on that container.  So let’s talk about that.  Have a favorite dish at Thanksgiving?  Of course you do; everybody does.  In fact, the better question is, if your Thanksgiving “dish” is a “favorite” then why don’t you serve it all year round?

Here are my three favorite Thanksgiving dishes for your consideration:

Stuffing.  Nine out of ten Thanksgiving stuffing recipes never made it into the bird in the first place.  Okay so I made that up, but I find it funny when a food that is “inside” by definition was never, ever inside.  Whatever.  Stuffing used to be that little pile of gently-spiced spongy material sitting benignly aside your helping of turkey.  I’d ignore it or push it around a little but most of this autumn pillow fluff never made it onto my fork.  Then I met my wife.  You could hibernate for an entire holiday season on my wife’s stuffing recipe.  It starts with ground sirloin and pork sausage and a whole lot of butter.  It ends with a ton of seasonings and spices, including sage and something called “parsley” (more on that later).  Forget the turkey… if a food ever deserved to be called “main course” it’s my wife’s stuffing recipe.

Cranberry sauce.  Is there a more wasted food on earth than cranberry sauce?  Seriously, this poor little enhancement sees the light of day only once a year, where it sits on your plate for the length of the meal before being scraped mercilessly into the kitchen trash.  How many people really make the perfect Thanksgiving “bite” – a combo of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce?  Not many.  I think cranberry sauce was created to brighten an otherwise autumn-colored “dish”.  Chateaubriand has its Béarnaise sauce.  Lamb has its mint jelly.  Turkey seems to acknowledge cranberry sauce as a garnish at best: something ornamental instead of “food”.

Speaking of garnishes, can we all agree parsley is the perfect example of one?  Yes, you’re adding color to the plate, but don’t you always wonder what you’re supposed to do with those little green trees?  Just like the colorful toothpicks you sometimes find holding your sandwich together, parsley is the first thing you remove (at least cranberry sauce rides out the plate for the entire meal).  Parsley is transported from wherever it invaded your plate (and what the heck is it doing in my wife’s stuffing, anyway?) to your bread plate, where it lays until its ultimate demise.  The relevance of parsley to the Thanksgiving meal (and to any “dish” for that matter) remains a mystery.  One I don’t have time for in this post.

Mince pie (AKA “heaven on earth”)

Mince pie.  We conclude my favorites with the most underappreciated, over-carb’d dessert of them all.  Mincemeat pie really did include meat back when the Pilgrims were celebrating Thanksgiving with swans and seals, but eventually someone (who deserves a medal) thought to remove the meat and add a whole lot of sugar to the chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits, and Thanksgiving spices.  The result is a pie that is scrumptious in some books (mine) and a veritable construction material in others (everyone else’s).  Seriously, this stuff is a brick.  It’s like pecan pie – or concrete – only ten times as dense.  And don’t forget to soften the blow with a little brandied hard sauce on top.  The spiked whipped cream is so good my wife skips the pie and has a dollop of the sauce instead.  But if you ask me, she’s missing out on the real dessert.

Your Thanksgiving dinner will no doubt include a favorite “dish” or two this season (glass? metal?) which should also make you wonder why you don’t eat it more often.  Is it because the Thanksgiving season is special, and you don’t want to dilute the magic by having your favorites year-round?  Yes, I think that’s the reason.  Thanksgiving deserves its own “dishes”… and it’s own season.  So c’mon, get grateful already!

It’s Thanksgiving Season (#2)

So here we are, nine days into the Thanksgiving season already.  Didn’t the time positively fly  (even with the extra hour last Sunday)?  Have you already booked your travel to visit loved ones later in the month? Have you already made pumpkin pie (because you can never have enough pumpkin pie, so why wait until Thanksgiving Day)?  Whatever you’ve done for the past nine days, I’ve already hinted at the three “F’s” of Thanksgiving: food, family, and friends.  Now let’s add a fourth.

Not football.  Not fun runs.  The most important Thanksgiving “F” is full; as in “full of thanks”.  You are thankful this season, aren’t you?  If you joined my bandwagon from last week’s post, you already have nine reasons (or nine people) to be thankful for.  Keep that list going until the big day, band-wagoner.

Now that you know the four (not three) “F’s” of Thanksgiving, let’s visit five facts you probably don’t know about the holiday.  Here’s a morsel for your taste buds: the very first Thanksgiving feast probably included lobster, deer, swans, and seals.  PETA and I struggle with those last two, but the list stands to reason because we’re talking pilgrims and Indians on the coast of Massachusetts, four hundred years ago, making merry for three straight days.  Those flavorful “entrees” were abundant back then, with nary a turkey to be found.

Remember last week’s mention of Abraham Lincoln making Thanksgiving a holiday?  That was in 1863, declared as every last Thursday in November.  Seventy-odd years later, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving Day one week earlier to extend the shopping season during the Great Depression.  But some states pushed back on Roosevelt’s pushback so in the 1940s you had several years with multiple Thanksgiving Days (more turkey for everyone – hooray!)  Eventually the compromise was made as we know it today: one Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday of every November.

My wife and I love dinner in front of the TV, don’t you?  But have you actually eaten a TV dinner?  You know, the frozen full meal in a box, with the tiny portions of generic food in the partitioned aluminum-foil tray?  Well, you can thank Thanksgiving for TV dinners.  Swanson overestimated the demand for turkey one year, and in a totally give-that-person-a-raise move, converted 260 tons of leftover turkey into 5,000 hand-packed dinners, complete with dressing, gravy, peas, and sweet potatoes, at a mere $0.98 a pop.  A year later they’d sold ten million of them.  Voila – the birth of the TV dinner.

Trivia question: What teams always play football on Thanksgiving Day?  Trivia answer: the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions.  Better trivia question: What teams first played football on Thanksgiving Day? Answer: Yale and Princeton way-y-y-y back in 1876.  I didn’t even know football was a sport in 1876.  As for games played on Thanksgiving Day, I would’ve guessed they started like, a hundred years after that.

If your Aunt Betty spends a little too much time at the holiday punch bowl and thinks it’s funny to start gobble-gobble-gobbling at your kids, you might want to remind her females don’t gobble.  Er, female turkeys that is. The signature Thanksgiving sound is reserved for the males of the species.  Female turkeys have been known to purr and cackle instead.  This is good information for your Aunt Betty (the purr , not the cackle).

Pay it “backward”

Okay, enough what-you-didn’t-know fun for today.  Let’s wrap with another nod to being thank-full (or, if you will, having “gra-attitude”).  I love this time of year because Starbucks gives away free coffee.  Okay, so they’re not really giving away free coffee.  Instead, drive-thru patrons continue the seasonal tradition of paying for the car behind them (and driving off quickly so as to remain anonymous).  I go to Starbucks more often just to participate (as payer, not payee).  So, for whatever you are grateful for, share that happy feeling with the people behind you in line.  Not a patron of Starbucks?  Doesn’t matter; any drive-thru will do.  So c’mon, get grateful already!

It’s Thanksgiving Season (#1)

Listen carefully… hear the clock a-tick-tick-ticking?  Better hurry up!  You’re already a day (or more) into the Thanksgiving season and you have so much to do!  “No Dave”, you correct me, “Thanksgiving’s just one day (or at most a long weekend) way-ay-ay at the end of the month… I still have plenty of time to prepare!”  No you don’t.  Junk that perception, online friends, because the times they are a-changin’.  I, blogger Dave, hereby decree Thanksgiving to be three weeks… and the season’s already underway.  So c’mon – get grateful already!

It’s fitting I’m writing this post on Halloween, “… the conclusion of spooky season…” as Lyssy in the City referred to it.  And isn’t it true?  Just like Christmas, the air goes out of the holiday balloon the very next day.  Cinderella’s carriage turns back into a pumpkin at midnight (ironically).  There is no “residual” spooky season on November 1st.  Halloween died the night before.

Retailers are determined to steamroll Halloween and Thanksgiving with the Christmas season, of course.  The artificial trees and decorations were available for purchase at Costco and Lowes this year before the Halloween candy even colored the shelves.  As I said in Third-Wheel Meal two years ago, Thanksgiving is fighting an uphill battle between the ever-expanding seasons before and after.  It’s like a sandwich with two massive pieces of bread but not much in between.

Thanksgiving is not just another holiday in my book; it’s a uniquely American holiday.  It’s the one we’ve been celebrating in the U.S. for 160 years thanks to the persistence of one Sarah Josepha Hale (who also wrote “Mary Had a Little Lamb”). Hale, along with Abraham Lincoln’s stroke of the presidential pen, made sure the holiday was “permanent… an American custom and institution”.  Gives this juncture in the holiday season a little more respect, wouldn’t you say?

Day-by-day gratitude

Like an Advent calendar, I propose we take twenty-three days to be grateful for what we have.  Open the little cardboard door on any given morning of November and the question will always be the same: What are you thankful for today?  Surely you can come up with twenty-three things.  Or how about twenty-three people?  Wouldn’t it be something if you told one person how grateful you are to have them in your life… every day until Thanksgiving Day?

Already on the shelves, sigh…

As with Christmas, it’s not the wrapping; it’s the gift inside.  Thanksgiving goes way deeper than turkey and football.  If you’re planning a trip to America and don’t know much about Thanksgiving, VisitTheUsa.com is not helping my cause.  The website reduces Thanksgiving into turkey and pie, Turkey Trots, parades, football, the pardoning of a single turkey, “shop ’til you drop”, and the travel challenges of a four-day weekend.  Really?  That’s the meaning of America’s Thanksgiving?

It’s not about this…

Maybe it would help if moviemakers and songwriters joined my cause.  I mean, think about it.  Halloween movies come to mind without much thought (with some, like A Nightmare on Elm Street, approaching ten sequels).  Hallmark churns out Christmas movies faster than you churn out Christmas cookies.  But are there any movies about Thanksgiving?  Well, yes actually, just this year we have Thanksgiving (the movie).  But please, don’t seek out the trailer.  This garbage has nothing to do with gratitude and everything to do with gratuitous violence.

I was going to make the same case for music. Halloween has you dancing to “Thriller” and “Monster Mash”.  Christmas has you “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”.  There is no “Thanksgiving carol”.  But then I remembered Amy Grant’s “‘Til the Season Comes ‘Round Again” (my wife’s favorite).  It’s a song about Christmas, make no mistake, but you could argue there’s a little Thanksgiving dressing mixed into the first verse:

Come and gather around at the table
In the spirit of family and friends
And we’ll all join hands and remember this moment
‘Til the season comes ’round again

Get what I’m saying?  Take the next three weeks and find the true meaning of Thanksgiving.  Like Halloween, the treats will still be there on November 23rd.  Like Christmas, you’ll still have the stress of travel and getting things done.  Those holidays are about finding your inner child.  This one’s about finding your inner adult.  So c’mon – get grateful already!
