Let Freedom Ring

In an Election Week – especially one as consequential as this year’s – it’s only fitting I can’t seem to focus on blogging. After all, my country and its prospective leaders demand (and deserve) my undivided attention. Any topic I choose to write about here pales in comparison.

So I urge you to do the same. Set aside the blogs you read or write, if only for a little while. Watch tonight’s tallies, accept tomorrow’s outcomes, and pray for peace and continued prosperity. As the patriotic “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” reminds us, we live in a sweet land of liberty.

Let freedom ring.

Five hundred posts would suggest I have something to say… This blog was born from a desire to elevate the English language, highlighting eloquent words from days gone by. The stories I share are snippets of life itself, and each comes with a bonus: a dusted-off word I hope you’ll go on to use more often. Read “Deutschland-ish Improvements” to learn about my backyard European wish list. Try “Slush Fun” for the throwback years of the 7-Eleven convenience store. Or drink in "Iced Coffee" to discover the plight of the rural French cafe. On the lighter side, read "Late Night Racquet Sports" for my adventures with our latest moth invasion. As Walt Whitman said, “That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” Here then, my verse. Welcome to Life In A Word.

  1. I take your point about today and have sworn off social media, but I’m doing the opposite of you and checking in with all my favorite bloggers, leaving comments, trying to pass the hours by being connected. Whatever keeps us calm is what counts I suppose as we wait…

    1. I was kind of thinking the same, Ally, which is why I jumped on this post… telling me to stay OFF SM. Ha!

All good, Dave. Thanks for the reminder to keep our sanity. 😛

  2. We spend part of the year in Arizona, own property there and pay County taxes. Wish we could vote! But we can’t, so will do the next best thing when it comes time to vote in the Canadian federal election – vote for the party that stands for common sense, free speech, less government, less taxes, less interference in provincial responsibilities and all the other things that our current government does not believe or deliver.

  3. Well Dave, as a Canadian citizen, living in the States since 1966, I wish I could vote, even though my one lousy vote is hardly going to swing the election one way or the other. But then again if everyone felt like that, where would we be? Michigan is a battleground state so we have been inundated with campaign ads and visits from both parties, so I am glad for it all to be done and over with quite honestly.

    1. It was nice timing to have just spent time in Detroit, lending better perspective to the swing of the Michigan vote. We’re used to Colorado (former home) and South Carolina, which are decidedly on opposite sides of the coin.

      1. Michigan was a huge battleground state and they had the biggest voter turnout, many before the election. It was not the outcome that Michigan, or much of the U.S. expected. They were still counting ballots today for the senate raise here in Michigan.

    1. It’s a good reminder, Lyssy. We’re not electing a President so much as we are an entire administration. Let’s hope we have responsible representatives who work for the good of the people.

  4. I got here late so I can only appreciate your advice in the past tense. I do love the Liberty Bell, and have had a palm-sized replica for most of my life.

  5. No matter where each of us stands on the political spectrum we can pray for our leaders to respect the rule of law, to serve wisely and follow the Golden Rule. Perhaps we could all agree on that! And as God honors those prayers, our nation will prosper once again. “Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor” (Proverbs 21:21).

    1. Such powerful words in the Proverbs passage, Nancy. We don’t use them often enough in our daily lives. Righteousness. Prosperity. Honor. If our nation can ever get a handle on those three we can once again, unconditionally, say we are proud to be Americans.
